Life Horse Inc.

Founded in 1996, Life Horse Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located at Breezy Hill Stables in Thurmont, Md. Once offering rides to terminally ill children, the program has grown into a sanctuary and rescue for at-risk equines, providing rehabilitation, retraining, or lifelong care while fostering the healing bond between horse and human. The program is free of charge for church groups, special needs groups, at risk children, etc. It is completely funded by donations and all work is performed by volunteers.

Compassionate Care

Each horse is evaluated by a veterinarian, farrier, dentist, and trainer to ensure the best chance of adoption or lifelong sanctuary. Horses are always welcome back for any reason, ensuring they never face uncertainty again.

Sanctuary

Among our cherished residents are Happy Tuesday, age 33, and his lifelong friend Steel Bulle, 25. Rarely apart, their bond embodies the spirit of Life Horse. Sanctuary residents like them are eligible for monthly sponsorships to help cover their care.

Community & Education

Life Horse hosts an annual Open House where visitors can meet the horses, learn about responsible ownership, and see adoption prospects in action. An on-site leasing program also allows potential adopters to discover the joys and responsibilities of horse care firsthand.

About Us

Owner 1

Joe Topper

Owner, operator and driving force behind the success of Breezy Hill Stable. Joe's motto is: "Do what you love and you will not work a day in your life."

Owner 2

Beth Walker

If I could save every horse out there I would! Ever since I was a little girl horses have been in my life. We have created an exceptional stable and sancuary for horses to live a healthy happy life.

Our Story

In 1990, after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, there was no antidote for biological warfare. Horses were used to help develop antidotes and vaccines for it. Joe, a milkman at the time, decided to take a job with a pharmaceutical company to assist in the development of these biological weapons antidotes. After his first encounter with the horses, he fell in love, and Breezy Hill Stables was born.

Breezy Hill Stables started in 1996 with nine stalls on 11 acres in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The demand for quality horse boarding facilities was quickly identified, and Joe soon outgrew the initial facility. In 2005, he purchased a 253-acre farm north of Thurmont, Maryland. Today, Breezy Hill Stables is a full-service stable offering boarding, lessons, and layup facilities, as well as both indoor and outdoor arenas. The stables are also extremely active in Thoroughbred horse rescue. Their non-profit, Life Horse Inc., rescues horses from a horrible ending, rehabilitates them, and then adopts them out to loving owners. To find out more, click the link below.
